One rule above all others.
Business is business.

We open on water. Sai Kung, 1991. A ceremony boat sits low in the harbour with two hundred men aboard. Jimmy Wong — rank 432, the man running the show — watches faces in the crowd with the attention of someone who knows what a planted informer looks like. He has learned this the expensive way.

Afterwards, over tea in a Tsim Sha Tsui teahouse, Jenny Wong asks him how it all started. And Jimmy, for the first time, goes back. To the Kowloon orphanage. To the Walled City. To the night two eight-year-olds walked out of Father O’Brien’s door with nowhere particular to go.

To the day in 1981 when a white Toyota van appeared outside the orphanage gate and took a thirteen-year-old boy to a mansion in the New Territories — marble columns, a gravel drive, and a shed in the garden where he slept his first night.

“There is one rule that stands above all others, above family and syndicate, above friendship and blood. Business is business. Hong Kong won’t tell you that gently. It will show you.”

Blue Lantern spans twelve years and four countries. It is the story of what Raymond Wong built, what it cost to carry it, and what had to happen in London, Amsterdam, and Macau before anything like peace was possible.

The Characters

The people at the centre of the archive. Each file describes who they are — not what they do.

RPA-OCTB-1988-447
Jimmy Wong
黃志明
Rank 432 · Red Pole · Narrator
Raised in a Kowloon orphanage, recruited into the Brotherhood at thirteen. First-person narrator of the novel, speaking from 1991, looking back over twelve years he has clearly survived and has complicated feelings about.
Protagonist
RPA-PF-RAYMOND-001
Raymond Wong
黃天成
Dragon Head · Grandmaster · Rank 489
Grandmaster of the Brotherhood and the man who took Jimmy off the street. A careful, long-horizon thinker who communicates through indirection and has kept the archive from knowing everything about him even now.
Grandmaster
RPA-ELECT-001
Jenny Wong
黃惠蘭
Raymond’s Eldest Daughter · Rank 426
Raised alongside Jimmy at the Kam Tin estate. Four years older, with her father’s intelligence and a precision with people that she does not always use gently. She is the one asking Jimmy to tell the story.
Wong Family
RPA-TA-PETERCHENG-001
Peter Cheng
鄭成龍
Rank 415 · White Paper Fan · The Fox
The Brotherhood’s strategist and intelligence officer. Compiled a dossier on Jimmy before Jimmy knew Raymond existed. Never does anything without a reason, and rarely explains the reason at the time.
Strategist
RPA-OCTB-1988-447
Jay — “The Weasel”
Jimmy’s Oldest Friend · Kowloon
The boy who decided they should leave the orphanage. Earned the nickname before he had anything else. From the Walled City to the Brotherhood, Jay and Jimmy’s histories are woven together in ways neither of them ever fully mapped.
Childhood Friend
RPA-DORSET-002
Victor Emerson
Allen House · Dorset · Trainer
Hugo Allen’s man at Allen House, responsible for Jimmy’s full training programme over four years. Signs the leaving certificate. His assessment of Jimmy is the most succinct document in the Dorset series — four words, unredacted.
Allen House
RPA-ELECT-002
Anton Chan
陳安東
Rank 438 · Red Pole
Jimmy’s closest operational ally within the Brotherhood. Dependable under pressure, loyal to Jimmy’s direction, and in possession of information that he has always handled with the particular care of someone who understands timing.
Red Pole
RPA-SF-JOYCE-001
Joyce Ren
任慧如
Tsim Sha Tsui · 1988–1990
Encountered in Tsim Sha Tsui in 1988. The archive holds a substantial file on her that it did not release for three years after compilation. Her story intersects with Jimmy’s in ways that the open-access documents only partially reveal.
